"Japan's Nuclear Disaster: Lessons for U.S. Nuclear Power"

A Talk by Don Lichtenberg, PhD

Thursday, March 31, 2011
7:00 p.m.

Monroe County Public Library, Room 1-B

303 E. Kirkwood Ave.

Japan's huge earthquake and tsunami seriously damaged its complex of six nuclear reactors at Fukushima and led to damaging release of radioactivity. The United States has twenty-three similar nuclear reactors. So far, President Barack Obama has chosen to issue reassuring words rather than ordering a thorough safety review of U.S. reactors. President Obama has also said that Japan's troubles would not affect his plans to subsidize additional American reactors.

The talk will critically review this policy and point out the advantages and hazards of relying on nuclear power.

Don Lichtenberg is professor emeritus of physics at Indiana University.
He received a PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Illinois, and some years later joined the faculty of Indiana University in the physics department. He taught and did research in subnuclear theoretical physics at IU for about thirty years until his retirement.
He wrote two books on physics and more than 100 original research papers. He has followed nuclear developments in the United States and abroad since 1945.

"The Real War," a new documentary film series about war and military occupation, debuts with the Bloomington screening of "Body of War".

President Barack Obama has made ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty his highest arms control priority. It is an essential step towards a world free of nuclear weapons. Ratification requires
sixty-seven Senators to vote in favor. Indiana's Senator Richard Lugar will be pivotal.
He has not declared his position. In 1999, he voted to oppose ratification.
148 nations have ratified the treaty. It cannot enter into force without U.S. ratification.

"five years ... too many unanswered questions"

Join the Campaign!

"IRAQ 2006: Ending the U.S. Occupation"

Join our "End the War" delegation to Congressman Sodrel.

After meeting with Indiana Congressional Representatives, their staff, and Senator Richard Lugar in Washington, D.C. in September 2005, we are making plans to again lobby Congressman Mike Sodrel to end funding for the war on Iraq and to support House Concurrent Resolution 35 (calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq). A face-to-face meeting at Congressman Sodrel's Bloomington office is being organized for September 2006.

Our lobbying delegation will present the petitions with more than 4,200 signatures, in support of enactment of House Concurrent Resolution 35. We are seeking individuals who will speak about the need to "Bring the troops home now" to join our delegation to Sodrel.

Please contact us to participate in this crucial lobbying campaign.

On November 10, 2005, BPAC organizers presented the second in a series of programs addressing the need to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
This presentation, "IRAQ 2005: Ending the U.S. Occupation ~ Part 2" both educational and organizational, was designed to draw citizens and activists into the crucial campaign to support Congressional Resolutions calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Starting on Nov. 26, 2005, "IRAQ 2005: Ending the U.S. Occupation ~ Part 2" has been
broadcast on Bloomington's community television channel, CATS. See the CATS schedule for details on broadcast dates and times.

The "IRAQ 2005: Ending the U.S. Occupation!" Multi-media Presentation on July 25, 2005 at the Monroe Co. Public Library Auditorium was a success.
The response was overwhelmingly positive with people becoming involved in the campaign to support House Concurrent Resolution 35, calling for development and implementation of a plan for the swift withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

The "IRAQ 2005: Ending the U.S. Occupation!" presentation has been broadcast on Bloomington's Community Access Television Services (CATS - Channel 3) since August 8, 2005.
